The reverse happens just as often. A ticket can still be sitting proudly in the dispenser long after its prize pool quietly went bad.

If that sounds familiar, it should. This is card counting with different equipment. When I counted blackjack, the cards printed on the felt never changed, but the deck did. Every hand dealt shifted what was left, and a shoe that started neutral could turn strongly in the player's favor as the small cards came out and the big ones stayed in. You don't get an edge by memorizing the rules on the table. You get it by tracking what's already gone and knowing what that leaves behind. A scratch-off game is a shoe you can count from the outside, because the state tells you what's been dealt. So no, I don't think picking a scratcher should start and end with "that one looks fun."

Arkansas gives us plenty to track

Arkansas runs scratch-offs across a wide spread of prices and prize structures. Ticket prices, overall odds, jackpot sizes, and how many major prizes are still live all vary game to game, sometimes dramatically between two tickets sitting inches apart. That variety is what makes the state worth analyzing instead of guessing at.

But notice the question we're not asking. We're not asking "which ticket has the biggest jackpot?" That's the question the marketing wants you to ask, and it's close to useless on its own. The better question is: what has happened to this game since it launched? A giant advertised jackpot doesn't make a ticket good if the jackpots are already gone. A cheap ticket isn't automatically bad. And the game with the prettiest advertised overall odds isn't automatically the best game to buy today. The interesting information lives underneath the headline number, which is the same thing I tell people about jackpot hunting in any state.
